RA Life Expectancy: Does RA Affect Life Span? Read Article...
A myRAteam Member

Awe Lisa I understand wanting to know this question but …. You know this disease and so many other diseases they really don’t understand. I myself have checked my life expectancy and it freaks me out! I have been an odd duck medically all my life so… I’m not buying it. I have beat odds and yes I think of that number on occasion but it just tells me to live! Live my life now and get what I can from it. Let those statistics be wrong like all the other stuff, false negatives, repeated tests because our symptoms don’t match the criteria, you will have better days.
Don’t let those numbers be a death sentence!

What percentage of people with seropositive RA, who are around 58 years old and have had it untreated for over 10 years, experience severely reduced quality of life from pain and weakness?

That's a really important question. While there isn't a specific percentage for that exact combination of factors, here's what is known about seropositive RA and long-term untreated disease:

Having seropositive RA is linked to more severe disease outcomes, and a longer disease duration without treatment is one of the key indicators of reduced life expectancy and quality of life. When RA goes untreated, it can cause irreversible joint damage, which leads to significant pain, stiffness, and weakness. The impact on daily life can be severe:

- 88% of people with RA report challenges with everyday chores
- 84% report difficulty exercising
- 78% say RA interferes with their social lives
- 72% report feeling depressed
- Only 13% rate their overall health as excellent or very good

These numbers reflect how deeply RA affects quality of life, especially when not well-managed.

The good news is that it's never too late to seek treatment. Newer medications like biologics and DMARDs can still help slow progression and reduce pain, even after years of untreated disease. Speaking with a rheumatologist about current treatment options is strongly encouraged.
