I had that issue and I had a low sodium level. Once we got the sodium level corrected the spasms stopped.

It's understandable to be concerned, especially after a lumbar surgery. With RA, muscle spasms can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite disruptive, and post-surgery changes can definitely affect how they feel and how often they occur.

Most spasms are not immediately dangerous, but they can become a serious quality-of-life issue. Here's when to seek medical attention right away: - Severe or worsening pain
- Spasms spreading throughout the body
- Spasms accompanied by swelling or skin changes
- Muscle pain with dizziness, trouble breathing, high fever, stiff neck, or severe muscle weakness affecting daily activities

It's really important to loop in your rheumatologist and your surgical team about the increase in spasms since the operation. They can work together to figure out whether the surgery, your RA, your medications, or something like an electrolyte imbalance is contributing.

Don't wait on this one — post-surgical changes combined with RA make this worth a prompt conversation with your care team.
