I've just been diagnosed and have been prescribed Plaquenil. Read about the side effects such as hair loss, blindness and anxiety. Of course I'm a little hesitant to take it but I do need to take something. I tested seronegative with inflammation. I feel sick most of the time and have a lot of fatigue. Is this part of RA or is it my reaction to the diagnosis.

Thanks, all! So happy for this site!

Members shared mixed experiences with Plaquenil for rheumatoid arthritis, with many reporting successful tolerance over one to two years with regular eye exams, while others experienced hair thinning or loss that either stabilized or required supplements like biotin and collagen to manage. Several members emphasized that Plaquenil is considered a milder RA medication with fewer side effects than biologics, though individual reactions vary widely, and some found it less effective over time, eventually needing to add medications like methotrexate. A recurring theme was reassurance about common RA symptoms like fatigue, encouragement to stay positive despite the overwhelming diagnosis, and practical advice to stay hydrated, monitor vision every six months, and seek second opinions when needed.

I take a biotin capsule everyday for a long time and my hair seems fine. I also started adding a TBSP if collagen powder to my smoothie every day. My hair and nails look better than ever. I get it from Anazon.

I was on Plaquenil for a while along with methotrexate and had problems with my hair falling out. I've always had very thick hair. Started taking a hair and nail supplement that seemed to help but ultimately had to stick taking both meds. My hair finally started getting thicker over time but don't think it will ever be back to the thickness it was.

I’ve taken it a little over a year and have had 2 eye exams, no problems!

plaquenil alone, or with sulfasalazine was fine. Not good thought with methotrexate for me.

I have been on plaquenil for 1 yr, just had my required annual eye exam, I have done great on it, was able to get off prednisone after 16 years after I started plaquenil, yay! I take a high potency biotin capsule each day because of hair loss from methotrexate, seems to be helping!
