Members shared widely varying experiences with methotrexate and prednisone for rheumatoid arthritis, with some finding them effective while others faced serious side effects. Several members described methotrexate causing fatigue, nausea, mouth sores, elevated liver enzymes, hair loss, and in rare cases dangerous lung complications requiring immediate discontinuation, while prednisone commonly led to weight gain, increased appetite and thirst, moon face, osteoporosis, cataracts, elevated blood sugar, and skin changes. A recurring theme was that despite the challenges, many members viewed these medications as necessary trade-offs to maintain mobility and function, emphasizing the importance of regular blood monitoring, being vigilant about symptoms like breathing problems, and working closely with rheumatologists to find the right balance between managing disease and tolerating side effects.

I was on constant prednisone and I loved how it made me feel but the side effects of prednisone are so bad I have weaned myself off. I will take a dose pac if I am in a bad flair. I know it was great for the fatigue because it gives you energy at first but later on that seems to go down a bit. It is not worth it with the side effects of prednisone skin, vein and artery damage etc etc

I became so sick from methotrexate that I wanted to die. Nausea, horrible sweats and overwhelming exhaustion. It was very toxic.

I took methotrexate for 5 years without problem until I developed a sensitivity to it. Prednisone is my go to drug for RA. Have experienced moon face, bruising, paper thin skin, and on higher doses I'm like a shark in the kitchen. All the drugs have lists of scary side effects but the bottom line is how do you want to live your life. I will take some risk to improve my life.

Monicalarsonjungers, I was on both meds also and after a year I started having breathing problems. My Dr took me off the methotrexate and put me on leflunomide. By God will, it's working.
