Doc has me on Prednisone/Sulfasalazine which is great to relieve the pain but in order to slow/stop the progression of the RA in being told I have to go on a biologic. They sound super scary with a long huge list of scary "possible" side effects!! How do you decide which to go on? Is one better than the other? Does one have less side effects than the other? Looks like she's going to suggest either Humira or Enbrel

Members shared mixed approaches to deciding between Humira and Enbrel, with many emphasizing that no single biologic is universally better since individual responses vary widely, and both have patient assistance programs that can make them more affordable or even free. Several members described their own medication journeys, including some who tried natural remedies like turmeric, ginger, and anti-inflammatory smoothies for pain relief but ultimately recognized that only prescription biologics can slow disease progression, while others switched between Enbrel, Humira, and Orencia due to effectiveness or insurance changes. A recurring theme was balancing the fear of serious side effects with the reality that untreated RA can lead to permanent joint damage, and members encouraged each other to work closely with their rheumatologists, explore manufacturer copay programs, and remember that methotrexate and biologics serve different but complementary roles in managing the disease.

I didn't have cherries but it still worked. And I bought the SuperBoost mix from Amazon instead of the chia/flax seeds

@A myRAteam Member changing your diet can be easy if you do it a little at a time. Since this us life long, if it takes you a couple of years of trial and error, then so be it. I would suggest that you get on Pinterest and check out the plethora of recipes that are geared towards us that taste great. As for the foods you ready can't live without, who says you can't have them? Just moderate those a little. Remember the key is little adjustments.

Oh yea and pineapple or papaya (not canned) are good to add as well. They help with inflammation. Note: if you add the chocolate soy milk like I did the smoothie will look like swamp water HAHA! but it tastes good and makes you feel even better! =)

Pamelae Google the drug company and see if they can help you with the costs. Sometimes companies will help out with costs even if they do not have a formal program. they would prefer to get something from you and insurance as opposed to nothing because you cannot afford to purchase the drug. Some rheumatologists have information about these programs. Mine did not ---I just got lucky and found it on my own. good luck to you.

I took Enbrel for several years which worked great. I then was diagnosed with a tumor in my pancreas which was pre-cancerous. I had major surgery where 1/2 my pancreas, my spleen and gallbladder were removed. Nonetheless, I was sufficiently freaked out by the Enbrel and I refused to treat for almost 6 years. I went gluten free and while it helped, it did not control my joint damage. I lost almost 50 pounds, which helped as well. However, I've had to start treating again and am starting with injectable methotrexate. Because I'm immunocompromised (RA and without a spleen), I'm trying to control the joint damage with the most efficient and least damaging of the options out there. My rheumatologist advised if I can't get the joint damage under control, she would recommend Orencia as it works different that the other biologics and is less risky to me. Hope this helps!
