If sores are linked to methotrexate, stopping or adjusting the dose can help — with ulcers usually clearing up in about three weeks after a medication change. Everyone heals at a different pace though. While waiting for sores to heal, there are some things that may help speed up relief:
- Saltwater rinses — warm saltwater can be soothing and help healing
- Alcohol-free mouthwash — gentler on sensitive tissue
- Magic mouthwash — a prescription mouthwash some doctors recommend
- Folic acid supplements — if sores are linked to methotrexate, a doctor may increase folic acid dosage
- Doctor-prescribed creams — especially helpful for nose sores
