Jennie - Thank you for your reply. I've been taking Methotrexate injections weekly at 20mg for 3 months. My rheumatologist thinks this is an appropriate dose and has asked me to wait until the 6 month mark to consider adding a biologic. I'm pretty miserable and I've noticed changes to my hands and feet even over the last month since I've seen him. I have been on hydroxychloroquine for several years. I hope that you do well with Methotrexate and see improvements quickly.

Waiting is the absolute worst. Are you on the pill or injections? I just started Methotrexate yesterday after being on Hydroxychloroquine for 2 months. A different rheumy changed me, as she didn’t think it Hydroxychloroquine was strong enough for my symptoms. Anyway, she put me on the injections, saying they tend to work faster than the pills with fewer symptoms of stomach issues. I really hope the shots do work fast. Have you contacted your rheumy to ask when he/she thinks you’re gonna get any relief? If you haven’t already, you could give him/her a call and ask. Maybe you need a little stronger dose? It’s terribly frustrating to wait and wait, I certainly know that! Prayers for your relief soon. Keep us posted.

Hang in there — three months can feel like forever when you're waiting for relief, but methotrexate is known for being a slow starter. It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to begin showing improvements, and up to 12 weeks to feel the full effects. So at 3 months, some people are just starting to notice changes. A myRAteam member shared that in the beginning they felt worse the day after taking methotrexate, but after about six months, that changed completely — noting it just takes a while to fully kick in.

Another myRAteam member said that after three months they had hardly any flares and felt more like themselves again.

So experiences really do vary from person to person! It's really important to keep your rheumatologist updated on how you're feeling. They can help by:

- Adjusting your dosage if needed
- Adding other medications to support your treatment
- Recommending ways to manage any side effects you may be experiencing

Don't stop or change your medication without speaking to your doctor first — staying on track gives it the best chance to work.
