Throat discomfort is something some people with RA do experience, and it can have a few possible connections to the condition.
RA can cause inflammation in unexpected places, including joints and cartilage in the chest and neck area. One possible cause of that "weird feeling" near the front of the throat could be related to the sternoclavicular (SC) joint — where the collarbone meets the breastbone — or surrounding cartilage. When RA inflames this area, pain or discomfort can radiate toward the base of the neck or upper chest.
Another possibility worth mentioning is costochondritis, which is inflammation where the ribs meet the cartilage near the sternum. This can sometimes create sensations that feel like they're coming from the throat or chest area.
It's also worth knowing that some people with RA develop a condition called Sjögren's syndrome, which can cause dryness and discomfort in the throat and mouth area.
Here's what's most important though:
- Any new or lingering pain or discomfort in the throat or chest area should be brought up with a doctor promptly
- A rheumatologist can help determine whether it's RA-related or something else entirely
- Don't wait it out — getting evaluated ensures nothing serious is missed
Definitely bring this up at the next appointment, or sooner if it worsens!
