Are there issues with taking methotrexate and supplements like berberine that might affect liver enzymes?
Yes, this is an important concern. Methotrexate itself can affect liver function, which is why regular blood tests are recommended to monitor for liver problems. When taking methotrexate, it's crucial to inform your doctors about every supplement you're taking, including herbal ones like berberine.
Methotrexate can have drug interactions with many medications and supplements that may increase side effects or toxicity. These interactions can sometimes affect your liver enzymes and overall safety.
What you should do:
- Make sure your rheumatologist knows about all supplements you're taking
- Don't stop methotrexate or change doses without consulting your doctor
- Continue with regular blood testing to monitor liver function
- Discuss with your doctor whether berberine is safe to continue alongside methotrexate
Your health care team can help identify if the berberine is causing the elevated liver enzymes and determine the safest approach for managing your RA while protecting your liver health.

You don't have any problems without Methotrexate? Doesn't it prevent the crippling effect or that's what I was told. I think I'm going to talk to my Rheumatologist. I'd like to stop taking it as well. I think it does more damage than good.
Thank you
