What are people's experiences with leflunomide, and is it normal to feel scared about starting these medications?
It's completely understandable to feel anxious about starting a new RA medication. Many people share this concern, and you're not alone in feeling this way.
While the search results don't specifically mention leflunomide experiences, they do highlight something important: it's common for people to feel hesitant about new treatments. One myRAteam member shared how their boundaries around treatment kept changing - they said they'd never self-inject or get cortisone shots, but eventually did both as they learned to manage their condition.
The fear often comes from uncertainty about side effects. Here's what helps:
- Have an honest conversation with your rheumatologist about your specific concerns
- Ask about common versus rare side effects
- Discuss what symptoms to watch for and when to call
- Talk about how side effects can be managed if they occur
- Remember that not everyone experiences side effects
Your rheumatologist can monitor you closely when starting any new medication and adjust your treatment plan if needed. Many people find that the benefits of controlling RA inflammation outweigh potential risks, but this is a personal decision you should make together with your doctor.
It's okay to take time to process this decision and ask all the questions you need to feel more comfortable.

I've been on it for over a month. I haven't had anymore gastro problems than usual, no diarrhea. So far so good.

I'm on leflunomide. I'm also on hydroxichloroquin. They put me on a generic humira. But I was getting sick with nausea and diarrhea for 10 days or more every 6 to 8 weeks. I usually get sick twice a year with that. But it got to be more often with the injections.

I’m currently on Leflunamide and haven’t had any side effects. I take it in combination with Enbrel. These medications scare me too but they really do improve RA symptoms.

I took Leflunamide for about a year or so. The diarrhea was awful. That was my only complaint though.
