It's completely understandable to feel anxious about starting a new treatment, especially with biologics, given their method of administration and potential side effects. While biologics have been effective for many in managing rheumatoid arthritis, it's important to be aware of possible reactions. Infusion reactions, similar to allergic reactions, can occur, particularly after the first infusion. These reactions can include symptoms like itching, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, chills or fever, and changes in blood pressure. Most cases are mild and can be managed with antihistamines. Additionally, biologics can increase the risk of infections due to their immune system-inhibiting effects. Common infections reported include upper respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections. It's crucial to discuss all your concerns with your rheumatologist, who can provide detailed information about the risks and benefits of your specific treatment plan. Remember, your healthcare team is there to support you through this process.

I got Cimzia biologic shots for 8 months but they didn’t change a thing. Now I’ve been on Orencia infusions for over a year. My doctor says it’s stopping damage in my joints. I can’t say I feel particularly great, but I want to assure you that I have had no side effects at all from either treatment. The doctor says my discomfort is from my Fibromyalgia, not my RA. Good luck!
