Do JAK inhibitors cause weight changes?

The evidence on JAK inhibitors and weight change is mixed. Different JAK inhibitors may affect weight differently.

What research shows:

- Tofacitinib (Xeljanz) may actually support healthy weight by helping transform white fat cells into more metabolically active brown fat cells
- Upadacitinib (Rinvoq) didn't cause weight gain in RA clinical trials, but did cause some weight gain in people using it for atopic dermatitis
- The makers of Rinvoq list "increased weight" as a possible side effect

What to watch for:

If you notice significant weight changes after starting a JAK inhibitor, talk with your doctor. They can help evaluate whether the benefits of the medication outweigh any side effects and discuss alternative options if needed.

A physical therapist or registered dietitian can also help you manage weight through healthy eating and appropriate physical activity while on these medications.
