Can you experience brain fog with rheumatoid arthritis?

Yes, brain fog is actually quite common with RA, though it's often overlooked. Studies show that between 31% to 71% of people with RA experience some form of cognitive impairment. It's surprising your doctor hasn't heard of it, as it's a well-documented symptom.

Brain fog with RA can include:
- Forgetfulness and confusion
- Trouble concentrating or thinking clearly
- Difficulty finding the right words
- Fatigue and spacing out
- Problems retaining information

The connection between RA and brain fog is believed to involve several factors. Chronic inflammation can release proteins called cytokines in the brain, which may alter neurotransmitter function. Additionally, the anxiety and depression that often accompany chronic pain can contribute to cognitive problems.

It might be worth discussing this with your rheumatologist specifically, as they may be more familiar with this symptom than a general practitioner. Many myRAteam members have found relief through managing their inflammation and pain, adjusting medications, and making lifestyle changes.

You're definitely not alone in experiencing this frustrating symptom.

Irene57. From what I can tell well (atleast for me), I experience brain fog. Originally thought it was just when I was going through a flareup while waiting for a med to be approved. Then I realized even in between I just was not as quick or sharp thinking as I use to be. Rationalized probably due to my age. I had difficulty keeping up on changes in processes at work. This depressed me due to always being so good at it. I eventually retired early due to constant fatigue, and not keeping up at work. Mind you I was a top performer for years. Now just getting use to taking care of myself has improved ra. I have time to walk, and rest when needed. Take care and dont beat yourself up it's not your fault.

Irene my grandma had what they called back then "hardening of the arteries". Seemed like at an early age. So I have worried about dementia too. I paid attention and dont think that was causing it for me. There is a movie called "Alice" that depicts that, and I dont think that is what was going on with me. I used to tell our members about that movie. So I assure you , you are not alone. And since retiring and making my health a priority Im pretty sure it's RA related. I take naps, walk and have less overall stress. Definitely, get tested though. Keep us posted please. Take care of yourself Irene57.
