I have Erosive Inflammatory Osteoarthritis (No RA). It effects my fingers and wrists. I also have carpal tunnel. I sleep with compression gloves and braces. I also use a wrist support during the day if I over do it. I don't take any meds bc we just don't get along

Could be OA or RA or the start of a flare. Time will tell. Try ice or heat or compression. Maybe Tylenol or ibuprofen. A splint may also be helpful. Feel better soon!

What could be causing excruciating wrist pain with osteoarthritis on X-rays?

Waking up with severe wrist pain can be concerning. Since your X-rays show osteoarthritis, the pain could be related to that condition, where cartilage breakdown exposes bones and causes pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis pain is typically sharp and can worsen after periods of rest or inactivity.

However, it's important to know that osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can occur together and cause similar symptoms in the wrist. RA often affects the wrists and small joints of the hands, causing inflammation, warmth, swelling, and pain that's frequently worse in the morning after rest.

Key differences to consider:

- OA pain: Usually sharp, worsens with activity, improves with rest, and may feel like the joint is "on fire" with grinding sounds
- RA pain: Often feels like pressure building up inside the joint, sharp and constant, worse after periods of rest (like overnight), and may cause morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes

If this severe pain is new, worsening, or accompanied by warmth, swelling, or prolonged morning stiffness, it's important to contact your doctor or rheumatologist. They can examine your wrist, possibly order additional tests like blood work to check for inflammatory markers, and determine if there's an RA flare or other cause behind the sudden pain increase.
