I have a message into my GI/Hepa doctor inquiring regarding the safety of beginning a new biologic, Actemra. I realize this thread is about methotrexate and I am interested in the effects of that, too, on the liver as I have recently been diagnosed with stage 2 NAFLD and liver fibrosis. Are either of those drugs safe for me? My rheumatologist, after telling her that Simponia ARIA was making my symptoms worse, without conversation DC'd the Simponi ARIA (which I do not oppose) and decided unilaterally to start Actemra. I'm not even sure she is aware of my new liver diagnoses.

Yes, liver damage is one of the serious potential side effects of long-term methotrexate use. Because of this risk, doctors will regularly monitor your liver function through blood tests while you're taking methotrexate. While liver damage is considered a rare but serious side effect, it's important to tell your healthcare provider right away if you experience any concerning symptoms. Your doctor may need to adjust your medication or stop methotrexate treatment depending on your situation.

Yes I had to give up mtx because of liver. So sad because it worked well for me and I haven’t been the same since.
