Members shared their experiences managing sciatica pain alongside rheumatoid arthritis, with many finding that the discomfort can last from a single day to months and may stem from overlapping conditions like degenerative disc disease or SI joint dysfunction. Several members described relief through physical therapy exercises (especially for SI joint issues), epidural injections, over-the-counter pain relievers like Aleve, topical creams, muscle relaxants such as Robaxin, leg elevation, and chiropractic adjustments, though some noted that certain stretches or PT sessions triggered RA flares. A recurring theme was the importance of getting imaging like an MRI to identify the root cause, whether it's degenerative disc disease, genetic factors, or joint inflammation, and working closely with doctors to find a personalized treatment plan that addresses both the sciatica and RA without worsening either condition.

Degenerative disc disease is OA. I have it in my neck and lumbar vertebrae. PT really helped me. You have to keep at the exercises. Hope you get PT soon so you can have relief

I was finally diagnosed with degenerative disc. L3 L4 and L5 severe pain they recommend PT so they’re scheduling me. Hopefully not a long wait. Not sure if this has anything to do with my RA.

Just make sure that you do not also have degenerative disc disease. I do. I had surgery on my neck last year and just had low back surgery this year. I'm 50 but have had back issues since I was 13. I fell off a trampoline. I also had many tough jobs and chores which didn't help. I also found out that my dad and I had the same back issues and that could be genetic.
Anyway, just make sure you don't have other issues causing the sciatica.

Hi Becky! I'm actually happy to hear that pt helped your si joint. The dr put me in pt for my neck a couple years ago when my ra was worse and after a couple sessions it made me flare. I've tried some stretches I've seen on line and they seem to aggravate it. When it first happened it felt like my SI joint had to pop (closer to my hip) and the chiropractor did manipulate that and gave me some relief but has always felt tight still to the left of my spine. I think it is my si joint and I'd be happy to do pt if it helps. Once I get my mri results I'll know what treatment the Dr recommends. Thanks for replying!
