I've tried ice packs and the otc creams but this round of swollen ankles and itchy pain in my ankles calves and legs is painful. This am I am trying a few aspirin to see if that will subside the pain but I'd love any feedback on if aspirin helps with this?

Members responded to the question about using aspirin for leg pain and swelling by sharing that aspirin alone typically does not address inflammation or RA symptoms, with several cautioning against NSAIDs due to personal experiences with bleeding ulcers or medication restrictions. The most commonly recommended strategies included compression socks or stockings (applied in the morning before standing), elevating legs above the heart, icing feet in cold water before bed, and using topical treatments like Arnicare or arnica massage balm for localized relief. A recurring theme was the importance of staying active to prevent stiffness, wearing supportive footwear like Crocs, and consulting with a doctor about underlying causes such as heart disease or venous insufficiency, especially when swelling persists despite home remedies.

While aspirin can help reduce inflammation and pain from RA symptoms, it's important to try it for at least two weeks to see if it significantly helps with swelling and pain. If aspirin doesn't provide relief, other NSAIDs might be more effective for managing your symptoms.

While aspirin can help reduce inflammation and pain from RA symptoms, it's important to try it for at least two weeks to see if it significantly helps with swelling and pain. If aspirin doesn't provide relief, other NSAIDs might be more effective for managing your symptoms.

Remember that while aspirin can help with symptoms, it doesn't treat the underlying RA or prevent joint damage. For the best results, work with your healthcare provider to determine the right dosage and ensure it's safe for you to take aspirin, especially if you're taking other medications. For foot and ankle pain specifically, some myRAteam members have found relief by wearing supportive footwear with adjustable straps. If your ankle and foot pain is significantly affecting your mobility or daily activities, consider asking your doctor about seeing an occupational therapist or podiatrist who can provide specialized care for RA-related foot issues.

I had a stretch about 2 years ago of unaccountable foot and ankle swelling. A 4-hour car ride set the ball in action. PCP ran a battery of tests and all seemed well, so no explanation. Finally she settled on venous insufficiency when blood pumps just fine down to feet. But not enough power in blood vessels in leg to pump it from feet back up. This causes edema, thus foot and ankle swelling.
I do take meds for high blood pressure but it's well controlled.
It happens when sitting too long, working at desk etc. So, I remember to get up and walk around.
Furosemide helps with the swelling especially when travelling. I have a motion footrest under my desk like a teeter totter I rock my feet. Compression socks when necessary.
And often, I have no problem at all with this venous insufficiency. Go figure.

I don't take aspirin, ibuprofen or NSAIDS. I took meloxicam for a long time and developed a bleeding ulcer. I was hospitalized for a week. Gabapentin, Plaquenil and Xeljanz.
