I used to have really thick hair but I’ve been noticing lately that my hair isn’t as thick. I take methotrexate and folic acid. I don’t have to shave under my arms as much (which I truly don’t mind). I was wondering what everyone else does for their thinning hair?

Members widely confirmed that methotrexate causes hair thinning, with many describing their hair as less thick, brittle, and slower to grow, though some noted it can fluctuate over time or improve after stopping the medication. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped, including switching to volumizing shampoos and conditioners, adding layers to create the appearance of fuller hair, taking biotin and collagen supplements, and using over-the-counter minoxidil (Rogaine), though consistent daily application is required for results. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of hair loss, with members expressing frustration that doctors often dismiss it as vanity rather than a legitimate health concern, while also finding solidarity in shared experiences and a silver lining in reduced body hair growth.

I was on methotrexate for many months and my hair was thinning very bad. Now I have been on idacio for a month and I’m hoping it is better. I also found methotrexate didn’t help any of my symptoms . I hope this new medication helps me as well. Has anyone else had any experience with idacio ?

I haven't found one doctor or nurse who was ever concerned with hair issues. Maybe it's bc they view hair as a vanity and not a health concern? But for those of us who have always been comforted by having healthy bouncy hair its a major blow. Men might look good with shaved or shiny hair but for a woman, it's frightening and depressing. My hair thinned badly after one therapy. It came back. But after covid vaxs it died. Brittle and breaks easily, no snap and no shine, fuzzy. So I bought all kinds of hair promise products. I'm taking biotin, collagen, multi vites with folic acid. I add conditioner etc before braiding and try to take care of it but will prob get a pixie cut. It will grow back. But stopping the RA is my first focus and hope. My husband offered to buzz cut me. I dont want to look like a motorcycle mama! Of course doo rags might be fun.

You can use minoxidil. This is generic Rogaine. However you have to apply to hair daily and from what I understand, it is a sticky mess. Lately I have learned you can take Minoxidil at low dose as a pill. I'm thinking of contacting my dermatologist, but worry about interactions with my other meds.
