I have been taking plaquenil for 5 months and sulfasalazine for 2 months. They haven't been very effective, and my rheumatologist told me to prepare for a med change at 6 months. She said I could keep taking sulfasalazine but I would drop plaquenil and try either enbrel or methotrexate. I am not sure what I want to do at the moment. What are your experiences?

RA docs usually start with Methotrexate alone but Enbrel and methotrexate are a sensible combination if Plaquenil not working well for you.. Methotrexate boosts the biologic drugs. Take a look at the chart progression at the American College of Rheumatology website.

I am on methotrexate pills. I am in no hurry to go on biologics. I just feel like there are more risks (side effects) and they are definitely more expensive. I am also worried that once you start them there is no turning back. That said in my case the methotrexate is working. I have not used prednisone other than when I was first diagnosed and didn’t realize the side effects. I do my best to live a healthy lifestyle. I am hoping that I will never need to take anything else for my RA.

Methotrexate has been a drug that has been used for decades meaning it's not a new drug. I am on methotrexate because I have two spots on my liver.

I have been on methotrexate for 6 years now. Mild hair loss at the beginning but ok now. Hair gets dry in the winter so do hot oil treatments. Also take folic acid daily to counter the mouth sores. Enjoy a glass or 2 of wine on weekends. Dr and pharmacist said in moderation is ok. This is the only thing I have taken since being diagnosed. Seems to keep the ra under control

Those of you on methotrexate do you drink alcohol. I love wine and to ha a few drinks only on Saturdays. I don’t want to give that up. Also what about hair loss and sores in your mouth. Do you get any of those symptoms?
