For the past few weeks I have found that I have been dropping things out of my hands. It isn’t just big or hot things, it is small, soft, cool, hot, any texture, size or temperature things. Could it be a side effect of new meds (Rinvoq) or something neurological?

Thank you.

Members connected deeply over the shared experience of frequently dropping objects, with most attributing it to RA-related grip weakness rather than specifically to Rinvoq, though several members noted they would monitor whether the medication worsened the problem. Many members shared practical adaptations they've made to protect themselves and their belongings, including switching from glass and ceramic dishes to plastic, metal, and paper products, using cups with handles, choosing fat-handled utensils, ordering groceries online for curbside pickup, and incorporating grip-strengthening exercises with caution to avoid overdoing it. A recurring theme was the importance of ruling out neurological causes like carpal tunnel syndrome or cervical spinal stenosis through proper testing, with one member emphasizing the serious consequences of waiting too long to get evaluated, while others encouraged maintaining humor and self-compassion when navigating this frustrating symptom.

I drop things too and I am only taking Prednisone. My rheumatologist wants to put me on a biologic, but reading all the warnings has scared me off. With me, I drop things because the swelling in my fingers doesn't let me close my fingers well enough to grasp things. And I seem to have lost strength in my wrists.

I do this all the time. It's usually something small and lightweight. Some random object that I don't put much thought in. It's my grip. I did find out at the rheumatologist Friday that my grip strength is 25% of what it once was. If I pay attention and focus a bit, I manage to not have the droppies. It's usually in the kitchen when I'm busy and doing my "normal routine".

Yes, totally. In Canada, we no longer use plastic bags ( which is great) but it also means that cashiers no longer pack our groceries. I am always stressed when packing my own and because I drop items all the time, I basically just drop grocery items in my bags. It doesn't always have a good outcome!

Oh yes, I drop things constantly. Over the years I've changed over from glass and ceramics at my house to plastic, wood, and metal items because I got tired of cleaning up glass shards.

It's also hard to hold regular pens, paper clips, hand sew, etc.
