Members shared their experiences with hair thinning and loss, with many attributing it to RA medications like Plaquenil, methotrexate, Arava, and biologics rather than RA itself. Several members emphasized the importance of checking thyroid levels, as many people with RA also have thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's that can cause hair loss, and suggested discussing medication adjustments with doctors if thinning becomes severe. A recurring theme was the frustration of managing multiple autoimmune conditions alongside medication side effects, with members offering mutual support and encouragement to advocate for answers when doctors seem unconcerned.

I have noticed in last few months my hair is thinning out a lot . I have thyroid problems talked with that dr and she said my numbers were good . I will talk with ra dr next visit . No one seems concerned but me. Glad I have thick hair or I feel by the time they figure out what is going on I won’t have any.

I too have very thin hair now. Going to get off of methotrexate (it's really not helping me anyway) Hope with new meds that maybe just maybe its will grow back a little. I have a new Doc that is helping me finely. I am keeping positive.

RA doesn't cause hair loss but, most of the most of the meds to treat it do, methotrexate, steroids & most biologics. Also thyroid problems can also cause hair loss. Many people with RA also have thyroid problems and other autoimmune diseases. RA likes company!

@A myRAteam Member maybe you have thyroid disease. I have Hashimoto and it effects my hair. Also some RA medications can make hair thin. Like methotrexate. Are you on RA meds?

My ra dr has been weaning me off of methotrexate. I have completely been off of it for 3 weeks . I’m taking xeljanz xr , folic acid , synthyroid, bystolic I have hypothyroid with hasimotos. Plus I have a whole other auto immune disease. Misery loves company for sure .
