Members openly discussed the distressing reality of hair loss while taking methotrexate, with many experiencing significant thinning or clumps of hair falling out despite taking folic acid as recommended, and most reporting that hair regrowth typically begins within one to three months after stopping the medication. Several members shared practical strategies that helped them cope, including using specialized shampoos like Nioxin, taking biotin supplements (dissolved under the tongue for best absorption), trying minoxidil or Target's generic version, cutting hair shorter or into a pixie style to manage thinning, and even repurposing lost hair as nesting material for birds to find meaning in the struggle. A recurring theme was the difficult decision between managing RA symptoms and tolerating the emotional toll of hair loss, with many members ultimately switching medications when the psychological impact became too great, while others found ways to adapt and accept their changing appearance as part of their treatment journey.

I think I was only on methotrexate 3 or 4 months. I color my hair at home. I did color it but instead of every 6 weeks while on methotrexate I waited as long as possible between colorings. I don't remember the recommended dosage of folic acid but I believe, I was something like 1800 mg, I could be wrong about the mg. It was over two years ago. I got off methotrexate, if you're not seeing any improvement in pain, see your doctor, get off of methotrexate, try something else! Unfortunately, there is no magic one drug fits all for this wonderful condition. Don't give up! I'm struggling to find something that works. Thought remicade infusions we're great when I started. Now they have upped my dosage and shortened the length between dosages and I am not getting as much relief. So next month at my regularly scheduled doctor appointment I will be again discussing what can be done to get a better result. I'm trying to eat anti inflammatory foods but feel like I have to eat so much to get any relief at all. I wish insurance companies paid for massages, acupuncture, and other alternative medicines. I would definitely try other ways to deal with this disease.

Are you taking folic acid? It seems to help...

@A myRAteam Member - my hair thinned A LOT with Methotrexate. I read somewhere that someone who experienced hair loss on treatment actually kept the hair in a bag and then put it out for the birds to use for nesting material...so that is what I did during that time. Somehow it gave it all purpose. If I remember right, the thinning slowed down after a while. I am no longer on Methotrexate now though and my hair is as thick as ever again.

I was taking folic acid and still had major hair loss, caused me to become depressed. I used special shampoo and conditioner for a couple of months and my hair came back. I liked methotrexate because I felt so Good on it, but I couldn't stand the hair loss, moved to other meds, had other side effects, then got the remicade infusions, worked well for awhile, now not so much. Don't stress over it, look up hair loss and shampoo and you should get multiple results. Hope this helps!
