Hi everyone, I have been on Methotrexate (20 mg oral) since my diagnosis in March and in October switched to the injections to help with a flare up (she also increased my dose to 25 mg). I have had an amazing response to this switch. I am also on Enbrel once a week as well. I am also on folic acid and a bunch of vitamins. In the past few weeks i have had an increase of hair loss when I wash my hair. My husband even order me Ovations to see if that would help. I know it will take time to… read more

Members rallied around the conversation about hair loss on methotrexate, with many sharing that they experienced similar shedding but found it improved over time or with dose adjustments. Several members recommended practical strategies that helped them, including increasing folic acid, adding biotin (often 5,000 mg daily), taking leucovorin the day after injections, using hair-skin-nails vitamins, vitamin D3, and switching to a wide-tooth comb while shampooing less frequently. A recurring theme was reassurance that the hair does grow back, that people notice it far more than others do, and that methotrexate's effectiveness often makes the temporary trade-off worthwhile.

I took and still take Biotin 5000 mg. Made a huge difference in stopping the rapid hair loss. Its worth a try ~ it may work for you as well. Keep us posted.

Yes. I talked with my hair stylist and she recommended Biotin. I take it once a day 5,000 mg. and it really does help.

My doctor increased my folic acid and I now take hair, skin and nails vitamins and it seems to be working.

Throw your hairbrush away and buy a wide tooth comb or pick. Comb as little as possible. Also shampoo as little as possible and don't scrub, gently massage & then leave shampoo on for a few minutes. Also use a good moisturizer. Methotrexate also makes the hair very dry. After you've been on Enbrel for 3 or more months, your doctor should be able to start decreasing your methotrexate and probably be able to take you off it. The Enbrel works great, doesn't make your hair fall out or make you nearly as tired. I've been on Enbrel for 4 years and doing really well. Only on rare occasions do i need any other pain meds. Don't worry, your hair will come back in. I had bald spots but it all came back in and is very thick now.

My dr started me on 15mg MTX orally once a week and then upped it to 17.5mg orally once a week after a few months. It totally controlled my RA for 3+ years, but it stopped working for me in Apr 2017. I did lose some hair, but not to the point where people would notice (other than my hair dresser, me and my husband.) It did seem like a lot at first, but it definitely leveled off after a few months. You're correct too, that my hair grew back in after I stopped the MTX. I'm on Enbrel now and would love to go back on MTX and deal with the hair loss. Embrel just doesn't seem to work as well for me as MTX did while it worked.
