I began sweating terribly in about 2007. It starts on my scalp and my face gets really red. It then makes me feel hot all over with a little bit of body sweating. It happens without my putting in a lot of exercise. I used to think it was my anxiety but now I wonder if it's related to the RA.

Members widely confirmed that excessive sweating, particularly from the head and face, is a common experience with rheumatoid arthritis, often linked to medications like steroids, hydroxychloroquine, Cymbalta, and Gabapentin, as well as temperature regulation issues caused by autoimmune diseases. Several members shared practical coping strategies, including taking frequent quick showers to cool down, using special moisture-wicking sheets, and one member found unexpected relief from Vesicare (originally prescribed for bladder issues), which dramatically reduced their sweating during outings. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of this symptom, with many describing deep embarrassment and frustration over sweating without exertion, feeling both hot and cold simultaneously, and missing their pre-diagnosis bodies that rarely perspired even during intense exercise.

Yes! It's just awful. I haven't had this type of intense over-heating since I went thru surgical menopause at 35~If I am even halfway doing anything strenuous, watch out! I get so hot and then the awful heating starts and I get so red in the face. It literally takes hours to cool down. I Hate It! Even a trip to WalMart, where they evidently don't have any a/c, I literally melt, so needlessto say, W/M is striken from my list of stores~~ yes, Stillwaters, I do believe our thermostats are permanently broken! It sounds like we are so lovely, LOL!

When I started Cymbalta a couple years ago I began to sweat profusely-but that is a common side effect. I've also read about fibromyalgia causing it as well, but not 100% sure. It's terrible. I can be sitting in the AC and feel it start pooling down my hair and the back of my neck. I was never one to sweat at all hardly even with excessive exercise on a hot humid day. I also tend to run fevers periodically for no apparent reason.

Thank you for your response, @A myRAteam Member. I am sorry that you suffer this like I do but I am glad to know that this is part of it all. I have to add that I saw my internist a few weeks ago and he put me on Vesicare for some bladder leakage problems. I have read that it is one of a group of drugs that can possibly help the excessive sweating. I went to lunch with my son this week and although it was warm in the restaurant I did not start sweating. Also, I just got home from a visit to my parents and extended family and I did not start sweating! This feels to good to be true but that's how it went. I can't wait to talk to my Internist about this. I hope and pray that this will be my new normal. Google hyperhydrosis and talk to your docs about this. God bless and gentle hugs.

Yep, that's me. I tell people my "thermostat" is broken. Take lots of quickie showers. I can't cool back down without one. But it can also be 100 degrees outside and I'm shivering. The temp fluctuation is rather aggravating. If it changes a lot in one day, makes me feel sick. Just another day on our journey ....
