I was wondering if anybody could tell me if there experiences with spinal RA and their treatment?

I recently went to a spine surgeon and he told me my issues were due to RA of the facet joints in my spine. The radiologist confined this when I had shots done. Up until that point my rheumatologist said that rheumatoid arthritis cannot affect the spinal cord. From everything I've read online I have all the traditional symptoms. It is making my life unbearable. The pain in my neck is so bad that… read more

Members shared their experiences with spinal RA, describing severe neck and lower back pain that significantly impacts daily activities, with many noting that doctors have disagreed about whether RA can affect the spine beyond the cervical area. Several members found relief through pain management specialists who provide injections, radiofrequency ablation treatments that can last up to a year, physical therapy, water exercise classes, and natural anti-inflammatory supplements like turmeric and boswellia, though outcomes from back surgeries were mixed. A recurring theme was the emotional burden of living with chronic pain and multiple overlapping conditions, the challenge of advocating for proper care when medical opinions conflict, and the importance of exploring all treatment options including pain management programs, injections, gentle movement, and complementary approaches to find what works for each individual.

None of us in here want to be called a hypochondriac, but the issues are all very real. You have to tell the doctors what is going on and then work with them to find the best workable solutions for you. Is a long, hard road. We all know and understand. Shots, physical therapy, forcing myself to keep moving, water exercises in my pool in the summer, aromatherapy, sewing, cooking, orchid growing, tens/if unit, prayers, heating pad, rest and hydrocodone when the pain is far too intense are all things I do to manage. I hope you are able to find some relief. Kind and gentle hugs and prayers my dear.

I too suffer back, neck and shoulder pain. I go to a pain Dr. he treats with injections. Now I am having radio frequency ablation and it is helping. They insert needles into nerve and heat it up with radio waves. The resulting effects can last a year or more.

I also have been to a Pain Management group. With the new federal regulations re: prescribing opioids this is the safest option. I am currently attending Physical therapy 2x weekly. I try to attend a gentle Range of Motion water class. There are alternatives. Talk to your doctor about options to your treatment plan. Hugs....

Yes. Recently found out that my lumbar spine is in severe shape and the rest is moderate to severe. Neurologist, rheumatologist, and internist(my son) have told me it is serious. One disc is very close to spinal cord. They have said that surgery may be my only choice now. You see, I am in severe pain from nerve damage caused by spine that I am about ready to agree to anything that will stop the pain. I also have neuropathy, cramping in feet and toes, fibromyalgia, reflux, spiking blood pressure and dizziness( to point I have been taken to emergency room for possible stroke), and recent bladder and kidney issues ( mass on my kidney). Not sure if I have missed anything. Try not to complain but sometimes feel very sad about letting pain control my life. Will be seeing the neuro surgeon next week. May also have peripheral vein disease in legs so will be seeing a vascular cardiologist. Afraid people will think I am a hypochondriac so it is hard to share.
