Members responded to someone experiencing severe nighttime nausea and stomach pain by sharing that RA medications, particularly methotrexate and prednisone, are common culprits, along with the disease itself affecting the digestive system and slowing digestion. Several members described their own diagnoses of related conditions including celiac disease, acid reflux, IBS, and Barrett's esophagus, emphasizing the importance of blood tests and working with a GI doctor to identify triggers and consider a gluten-free diet if needed. A recurring theme was practical advice for managing symptoms, such as never sleeping on the right side to prevent reflux, elevating the head while sleeping, reviewing medication side effects with a doctor or pharmacist, and recognizing that pain itself can trigger nausea.

I don't have celiac disease but I'm following a mostly gluten free diet. Yes a lot of the gluten free foods sold in the stores are terrible. If you want bread and you don't mind baking, there are bread mixes you can buy that are edible. I haven't found any good prepared breads.
I've found it's easier to avoid foods that have normally have gluten. Meat, fruits, vegetables, and rice shouldn't have gluten if they don't have additives or sauces or breading etc.
Good luck! I hope this helps!

Acid reflux is awful and destructive to your esophagus. Try two things: never lay or sleep on your right side. If you do, you will suffer immediate reflux. Secondly try sleeping with you head and upper body elevated. Experiment with this and find the angle that lets you sleep and prevents the reflux. I too suffered from acid reflux, but didn't feel that my RA medications were the cause. I found that dairy products were one of the leading triggers for me. Roll over, get off that right side!

Good they found out what was wrong, but Celiac can be serious. Are you going to a GI doc? If you have Celiac you can never eat glueten.

I was having stomach pain for a year before my doctor finally did a blood test that shows I have celiac disease. She told me to eat gluten free for 2-3 weeks and see how I feel. Yes, I feel better, although I don't like a lot of gluten free foods.
