My big toe on my left foot has turned inward so much that the large joint has started to push outward and is starting to affect what shoes I can wear. Have any of you had this issue and had surgery to fix it? What was the surgery like? What was the recovery?

Good Morning,
Yes, I have had the surgery, actually June 29th of last year however my surgery entailed all 5 toes.
You mentioned that it is "beginning" to push out and effect the shoes you wear. The very first thing you should do is make an apt with a orthopaedic Dr (check their bio online and find one that specializes in foot) and let them determine what to do. There are special medical items such as spacers, bandages with construction to help re-aline and hold the toe in place, if it is from RA. If its a bunion he/she can help with that also. I waited years before I saught treatment by which time my left big toe was flat facing the pinky toe, and the other 4 toes were trying to lay flat aiming toward the big toe. I had major re-constructive surgery.)
Everybody is different so "if" surgery is required and its only one toe your recovery time would be from two weeks to four depending on the extent of surgical repair done, your work environment and the job you do.
Your question about shoes....we had a cobbler that would customize shoes (depending on how severe the toe was, but most patients were not satisfied as the RA continued to shift the bones which made the "expensive shoes" obsolete.
You'll be up walking on your heal in a boot only a few days post op but thats for only a few steps. They will give you crutches as well which will get you up and about a little easier but you won't be able to drive for at least one month-your experience might be different and your surgery might be heavier or lighter than mine but ask you doctor. What he likely won't tell you is that it really takes about one year to really feel better. As far as going back to work it depends of course what your work is. Keep in mind if you have RA in the balls of your feet the surgery will not help but if your goal is to put on a pair of shoes that aren't two sizes too big then by all means get the surgery.
OUCH @A myRAteam Member, that had to some recovery from that painful surgery!!! I have had a bunionectomy, but strangely enough my bunion was not on the side of my foot, it was on the top of my foot directly below the big toe. @A myRAteam Member, I am sure there is help for you too. I went to a podiatrist experienced with RA patients. God Bless...
I have had both of my big toes operated on and the surgery really isn't that bad. I had the right foot done and then one month later the left one done. It took about 4 months of recovery to feel 75% and about one year to feel 100% better. The RA affects the balls of my feet and even with the surgery I still have pain every now and then but the shoes fit much better and walking is a lot better. Good luck!
Yes
Pretty easy relative to what else we've done.
Usually a small cut at the end of your toe, in a put a pin in as long as they need to straighten out as many joints is they need.
So my surgeries I have basically been fusions.
They do have artificial joints for tow knucks. Never had, but the artificial finger knuckle suck.
