I have random muscle spasms mainly in my waist, back and shoulder areas. I use the word random because most of the time I'm not moving when they occur. Sometimes they happen when I roll over in bed or move a certain way. They are very painful and seem to just "grab me". I took Parafon Fforte for a few years but it stopped working. Flexeril really helps but makes me too groggy. Any ideas of what may help? They are getting worse and sometimes take my breathe away from the pain. It's embarrassing… read more

Members connected over the intense pain of sudden muscle spasms in the back, shoulders, waist, and legs, sharing how these episodes can strike without warning and sometimes last for minutes, leaving them breathless and hiding until the pain passes. Several members recommended muscle relaxers like Zanaflex, Skelaxin, and gabapentin for relief without grogginess, magnesium supplements or Epsom salt baths to address deficiencies that may trigger spasms, and heated blankets or hot tubs for immediate comfort. A recurring theme was the importance of staying hydrated, working closely with a rheumatologist to find the right medication balance, and giving yourself grace when these unpredictable moments happen in public or disrupt daily life.

I also agree with the whole gang..... a great heated throw is one of my BFF's when the spasms hit. I also have a hot tub and that helps!

Wow, I had that happen to me a month ago! All in my waist it would take my breath away. Like you said, it would just grab you without warning motors my RA Doctor and he really didn't give me any answers. It's been a month since it happend and I hope it doesn't come back. If you get any answers of why this happens let me know!

My Rheumatologist suggested Magoxide 400 mg at night with a meal to help with spasms. It is just a vitamin and over the counter. Valium was the only thing that helped me. Trying to wean off, but not sure how successful that will be!
