RA can affect the feet in several ways, including:
- Nerve involvement — numbness and weakness can be signs of peripheral neuropathy, which can occur alongside RA due to nerve damage
- Joint inflammation — swelling and joint damage in the feet can affect balance and how you walk
- Ligament weakening — RA can weaken the ligaments in your feet, changing their shape and affecting your gait It's really important to bring these symptoms — especially the numbness and gait changes — to your rheumatologist as soon as possible. Numbness and tingling can sometimes signal nerve issues that respond better to treatment when caught early.
A podiatrist or occupational therapist may also be worth seeing if these symptoms are affecting your ability to move around safely day-to-day.
