Exhaustion and fatigue with RA is so real, and it's one of the most common and frustrating parts of living with this condition. You are absolutely not alone in feeling this way.
Here are some practical tips that can help manage fatigue:
- Tackle tasks in the morning when energy levels tend to be higher
- Prioritize rest in the afternoon without guilt
- Keep a consistent sleep schedule and protect your sleep time
- Talk to your doctor if fatigue feels unmanageable β it could signal a flare that needs attention
- Consider counseling or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) β research shows it can actually help reduce fatigue, improve sleep, and better manage pain Feeling misunderstood by family and friends is something many people with RA experience deeply. It can feel incredibly isolating, especially when your condition isn't always visible from the outside.
A few approaches that myRAteam members have found helpful:
- Bring a family member to a doctor's appointment so they can hear directly from your rheumatologist
- Use simple, relatable language β one myRAteam member explains it as: *"I have a limited amount of energy each day and I just can't do that, even though I'd like to."*
- Try the "Spoon Theory" as a way to explain limited daily energy to loved ones
- Lead with empathy β sometimes family members react poorly because they're scared, not because they don't care
- Set a boundary around explaining yourself β as one myRAteam member put it, *"I explain to those I love, one time! After that, I just concentrate on taking care of myself."*
If relationships feel really strained, speaking with a counselor β alone or with a family member β can make a big difference.
