Congrats on taking that first step β literally! Starting methotrexate (MTX) is a big milestone in managing RA. Many people on myRAteam have shared their experiences, and it's helpful to know what to expect.
Here's what's commonly reported:
- It takes time to work β most people start noticing improvement between 3 to 6 weeks, with continued improvement over 3 months
- Early side effects are common β nausea, fatigue, and digestive issues are the most frequently reported
- "Methotrexate fog" β some people feel fatigued or mentally foggy the day after their dose
- Things often improve β many find side effects ease up after the first few months One myRAteam member shared that after about six months, the day-after fatigue they initially experienced completely went away. Another said after three months they had hardly any flares and felt more like themselves again.
A few tips that may help along the way:
- Take folic acid daily β it helps reduce mouth sores and digestive side effects
- Split your dose β taking half in the morning and half at night (no more than 12 hours apart) can ease nausea
- Stay in touch with your doctor β routine blood tests will monitor your liver and overall health
Always keep your rheumatologist informed of any changes you notice! πͺ
