What has your experience been with GLP-1 drugs and hormone medication together for rheumatoid arthritis?
Recent research shows that GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) may offer benefits for people with RA who also have overweight or obesity. In a study of 173 people with RA taking these medications, participants experienced:
- Greater reductions in RA disease activity
- Less joint pain
- More weight loss
- Lower inflammation markers (CRP and ESR)
- Improved cholesterol and blood sugar levels
Interestingly, the improvements in pain and inflammation weren't strongly tied to weight loss alone, suggesting these drugs may reduce inflammation through other pathways.
When it comes to combining GLP-1 drugs with other RA treatments, the study participants were already managing their RA with standard medications. The GLP-1 drugs appeared to provide additional benefits on top of their existing treatment plans.
However, about one-third of people stopped the GLP-1 medication due to gastrointestinal side effects like nausea or stomach upset, or because of insurance and cost barriers.
It's important to note that GLP-1 drugs aren't currently approved to treat RA specifically. If you're considering this approach, discuss it with your rheumatology team to see if it fits your overall health picture.
