Members shared deeply personal experiences about long-term prednisone use for rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions, with many describing serious complications including cataracts requiring surgery, avascular necrosis leading to hip and bone collapse, diabetes, osteoporosis, and glaucoma. Several members emphasized that while prednisone can be effective for managing flares, minimizing dosage and duration is critical, with many now taking the lowest possible maintenance dose or using short tapered courses only when absolutely necessary. A recurring theme was the difficult balancing act of needing steroids to control inflammation and pain while being acutely aware of their long-term dangers, with members encouraging each other to always consult doctors before making changes and to explore alternative pain management strategies.

Deborah, good info. I use a short course of prednisone, tapering dose, for maximum time 6 weeks only when absolutely necessary for periods of painful inflammation flare.
For me, prednisone has side effects that are extremely detrimental to other conditions I have. So, it's a balancing act.

Taxer
I have a battery powered jar opener that works great. I no longer am able to open any kind of jars and bottles. I also got an opener for water bottles. I keep one for water bottles in the house and one for my pocketbook. I can’t use the grip circles anymore. They are useless for me.

GmaFoley I have Osteopenia too. I was told about a somewhat new device that is supposed to help with it. Its called a Vibration Plate and all you do is stand, or sit, or even just put your feet on it and it helps with a lot of issues. Neuropathy, lymph node drainage, Osteopenia. Anyway, I did purchase one of the inexpensive models and mine has a waist high handle bar so I can steady myself. I stand on it 5 minutes twice a day! I just thought I'd mention it to you. I actually am enjoying using mine! I do it everyday!

Yes everything works different for everyone. Prednisone doesn't work for me anymore. The methylprednisolone does for a flare.
