I don't know if this is as a primary medication or as well as. I'm presently on Rituximab with my consultant wanting me to also take Methotrexate. I'm resisting taking the Methotrexate due to side affects. R A is progressing in me has caused damage to more than my joints however if Turmeric would help me with my painful swollen joints I would be happy to purchase. Any information or advice gratefully received. Thank you.

Is turmeric with zirconium being recommended as a primary RA medication or supplement?

Turmeric (curcumin) shows promise as a supplement for RA, but it's not a replacement for disease-modifying medications like methotrexate. Studies suggest curcumin may have anti-inflammatory properties that could help with pain, and some research showed people with RA experienced less pain when using it.

However, there aren't enough studies yet to prove turmeric is effective as a primary treatment for RA. The research that exists is promising but limited. Curcumin appears safe at doses under 1,200 milligrams per day for up to four months.

It's important to understand that while turmeric might help with symptoms like pain, it likely won't slow RA progression the way methotrexate does. Methotrexate is a DMARD that works to prevent further joint damage by regulating your immune system. About your concerns with methotrexate:

It's completely understandable to worry about side effects. A myRAteam member shared similar concerns about hair loss, while others reported experiences ranging from bruising to fatigue. However, many members also report that methotrexate works well for them.

Your rheumatologist is likely recommending methotrexate alongside Rituximab because methotrexate can be combined with other RA medications for more effective treatment. Since your RA is progressing and causing damage beyond your joints, having a medication that actively slows disease progression becomes even more important.

Before making any decisions about turmeric or declining methotrexate, please discuss both options thoroughly with your rheumatologist. They can address your specific concerns about side effects and help you understand the risks of not taking a DMARD when RA is actively progressing.

Thank you:) I decided to take the Methotrexate, purchased Turmeric and hoping to have an infusion soon. Worst part is my massive loss of hair, the rest I an deal with - being practically bald does my confidence no good at all.

I didn’t have any success with turmeric. Methotrexate can help your other RA meds work more effectively. Try not to worry about side effects. Easier said than done, but it sounds like your RA is not well controlled, so it sounds like a change in meds may be necessary. Have a talk with your rheumatologist. Best of luck to you.
