Does anyone have both RA and Sjögren's syndrome?

Yes, many people have both conditions. About 19.5% of people with RA also develop secondary Sjögren's syndrome. In fact, approximately half of those diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome have previously been diagnosed with a rheumatic condition like RA.

A myRAteam member's experience shows this is a common comorbidity, particularly in women who have had RA for a longer time.

Does it make RA pain worse?

Having both conditions can affect your experience with RA. People with both RA and Sjögren's syndrome are more likely to experience severe arthritis and may have complications throughout the body rather than just in specific joints.

However, the relationship is complex. While you may experience more severe arthritis, you might be less likely to have certain other symptoms like fever or rash. People with both conditions are also less likely to achieve remission of either disease.

The overlap in symptoms can make it challenging to distinguish which condition is causing specific pain, since Sjögren's can also cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and fatigue—all symptoms that occur with RA too.

Thank you for your response.

I think I have Sjögren’s as my eyes, nose, and mouth are extremely dry. My hair is very dry and brittle as well as hair loss. So I’ll talk with my rheumatologist about it on Tuesday.
