How can I exercise safely with RA joint pain and stiffness?

Exercise is actually beneficial for RA, though it may seem counterintuitive when experiencing pain. Regular movement helps prevent stiffness and strengthens the muscles around joints, which helps protect them from further damage. The key is combining stretching with strengthening exercises.

Many myRAteam members express concern about exercising while in pain. The good news is that proper exercise can improve mobility and help ease pain for most people with RA. Common joint symptoms with RA include:
• Swelling in joints
• Stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
• Warm or reddened joints
• Pain that may worsen during flares
• Reduced range of motion
• Pain that can affect daily activities like walking and driving

The pain occurs because RA causes inflammation in the synovium (tissue that produces joint lubricating fluid). This inflammation can also affect surrounding tendons and ligaments, leading to increased pain and stiffness. It's important to work with your doctor to develop an appropriate exercise plan that takes your symptoms into account.
