The biggest “side effect” would be a flare, I guess. It sounds strange, but when I took the oral MTX, it really didn’t do much for my RA, and I noticed no difference when I stopped taking it, other than I didn’t have to deal with the side effects from it anymore. After many years, I’m back on an injection instead of oral. It is working for my RA much better and far fewer side effects.

What are the side effects of stopping methotrexate suddenly?

While research hasn't shown any major withdrawal symptoms from stopping methotrexate, the biggest risk is experiencing an RA flare-up. These flares can occur within one month of stopping the medication and may include:

• Increased joint stiffness
• Worsening pain
• Joint swelling
• Fatigue
• Fever Important: Never stop taking methotrexate without consulting your doctor first, even if you're feeling better. If you're experiencing side effects, your doctor can help by:

• Adjusting when you take the medication (like taking it after meals)
• Scheduling doses for weekends to allow recovery time
• Adding folic acid supplements
• Prescribing anti-nausea medication
• Creating a safe plan to modify your treatment if needed
