Dry mouth can be caused by RA medications or it could indicate Sjögren's disease, which commonly occurs alongside RA. If left untreated, it may lead to dental issues since saliva helps protect teeth. Here are some helpful ways to manage dry mouth:
• Sip water throughout the day and keep water by your bed
• Use sugar-free gum or hard candy
• Apply lip balm regularly
• Run a humidifier
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol
• Ask your doctor about prescription mouth rinses or medications that stimulate saliva production
• Try over-the-counter saliva substitutes (available as lozenges, sprays, or gels)
