There is indeed a connection between osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). People with RA are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis due to chronic inflammation, long-term use of corticosteroids, and a sedentary lifestyle often associated with RA. Approximately 30% of people with RA develop osteoporosis, which is about twice the rate of the general population.

Regarding your situation, while disc degenerative disease and osteoarthritis in the back are not directly linked to osteoporosis, having multiple conditions affecting bone and joint health may increase your overall risk. Your rheumatologist's decision to test for osteoporosis and vitamin D levels is a proactive step, especially given your history of fractures and other symptoms. The bone scan will provide valuable insights into your bone density and help guide any necessary treatment.
