It took me about 1.5 years to find an RA drug that worked. During that time, I had trouble walking and had handicap parking. I still have flares, but once I found the right medication, I was able to resume an active lifestyle, including long distance runs and challenging hikes.

Yes, once you hit the right cocktail of drugs, you’ll be almost like new! But also age makes a difference, and not overdoing it. If you wake up the next day or two after a heavy workout, and feel like you got hit by a train and dragged 50 feet? Then you need to back off a bit. I used to do 100 mile bike rides on a race bike in my 30’s. Now at 68, I have a 21 speed sit upright “ old lady bike” that I ride around the neighborhood. And a recumbent exercise bike in my living room. I have learned my lesson about overdoing it, because the recovery can be very depressing and hurtful.

Sorry to hear you have not been able to cycle or hill climb. Having RA, or any of the Autoimmune Diseases are chronic illnesses that change our lives. Unfortunately, it has taken away activities so many of us have loved to do. If you think the drug regimen you are on is not helping to control your symptoms or slow progression do let your Rheumatologist know, speak with them, voice your concerns and work with them to try to keep you as mobile and pain free as possible. Perhaps have your Rheumatologist refer you to a physical therapist to assess you and help get you more movement. It truly is life changing, frustrating to say the lest, but try to live the best life possible in spite of it. It is not easy takes a whole lot of courage and stamina to deal with it all. Wishing you all the best.

So, hopefully your doctor can get your inflammation under control so you will be able to ride again. I find I have good days and bad days, so on the good days I do more. Good luck and take care.
