I’m glad that you’re getting a second opinion. I’ve watched the show, My Feet Are killing Me, and the doctors work with the patients and are willing to try what the patient feels comfortable with. I agree, toe amputations seem extreme.
I have not had luck or confidence in the orthopedic team at CRMH. They aren’t current in surgery methods and some want you to jump through hoops before they’ll do anything.

Pain is mostly from bunion and bone’s pushing down on ball of foot . Too messes up for restoration sort of surgery but not sure I’m ready to lose body parts to this-I’ve had all my large joints replaced but this feels much different-getting a second opinion next week.
Hard to find good doctors in rural areas for sure. Carillion in Roanoke has done all my replacement surgeries and I’ve had good care w/them. They’ve done both hips, knees and shoulders so I recommend them highly. I’m no an hour and half away so you’re probably closer than I . My rheumatologist in Roanoke as well but w/Lewis Gale. Those are the tough ones to find-I never felt heard until I got to her . Tried about 5 different ones in wv and all difficult.

I can certainly sympathize with you. Have you ruled out Morton’s neuroma causing toe pain? I mistakenly said ball of foot. Also, maybe get a second opinion. I had my surgery when I lived in Montana. The doctors there are amazing and very capable. The doctors here in Virginia, not so much. I’m still searching for a decent foot surgeon that I could feel comfortable with. Wishing you much luck as I know you’re going to need surgery soon since you can’t wear shoes anymore.

Thank you so much for the info! Mine seems to be in such bad shape he wants to remove all toes . Not sure I’m ready for that but like you -the pain making it hard and shoes getting impossible. I know this would allow the bunion at my big toe much smaller and help . Just getting some other thoughts on it all . 😊TY

The doctor also repaired the bunion and put a pin in the big toe to stabilize it. Sewed two toes together to keep them from overlapping each other. The surgery was performed more than 10 years ago ( not 5). I also had Morton’s neuroma surgery because that was causing incredible nerve pain in the ball of my foot.
