- It is a biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD).
Mechanism of Action:
- Simponi Aria is a genetically engineered antibody.
- It works by binding to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), a chemical messenger involved in autoimmune attacks.
- This binding prevents TNF-α from signaling the immune system to attack the body’s connective tissues.
Administration:
- Administered as an intravenous infusion (slow injection into your vein) by a healthcare professional.
- Given every 8 weeks after initial loading doses.
Common Side Effects:
- Respiratory tract infections
- Viral infections
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Low white blood cell counts
- Bronchitis
- High blood pressure
- Rash
Rare but Serious Side Effects:
- Severe infections
- Hepatitis B virus reactivation
