I've been getting more and more of those and never had a problem before. Any advice on preventing? I heard there are tablets available...would really appreciate any feedback. Thank you

Members shared personal experiences with cold sores while on Methotrexate, with many finding relief through L-lysine supplements, which several members described as a daily staple that helps prevent outbreaks triggered by stress or other factors. Several members also recommended folic acid to counteract mouth sores as a known side effect of Methotrexate, along with practical remedies including icing cold sores at the first sign of tingling, using campho-phenique or lysine topical treatments, trying an infrared light pen to shorten healing time, and checking vitamin B12 levels. A recurring theme was early intervention and proactive management, with members emphasizing the importance of acting quickly at the first signs of an outbreak and finding a combination of supplements and strategies that work for your individual body.

Are you taking Folic Acid? It counteracts the side effects of mouth sores and hair loss, probably some others that I am not aware of. I am on injectable MTX and the Folic Acid is a must. Maybe ask your rheumy about them. Folic Acid is a prescription. Good luck...

Another thing that helps me is an infrared light pen. I use it at the first sign of a cold sore. If I’m quick enough as in, before the blisters burst it can reduce the length of time I have the cold sore. Instead of 9 days it could be gone in in 5 days. It’s called a biostick. I got it a few years ago off the internet, not sure if they are still available though but you could find something similar

@A myRAteam Member Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I have heard about the B12. Will defnitely look into it if my L-Lyserine tablets don't work.

I don't take methotrexate, but I do get cold sores. One thing that really helps me is ice. As soon as I feel that itch/pain of a cold sore coming on, I put an ice cube in a baggie and put it on and off for 20 minutes. I do that a few times a day at the very beginning of one. I usually do it for a few days before you can see it. It doesn't make the cold sore go away, but it helps with the healing process. It's not as painful and long. I also use camphophenique. I put a little bit on a q-tip and dab it on. It burns sometimes, but it helps to heal. Hope this helps.
