Members shared mixed experiences with methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, with some reporting minimal side effects but limited pain relief, while others described severe reactions including frequent infections, nausea, and increased pain that led to discontinuation. Several members found that methotrexate worked better when combined with biologics like Enbrel, Humira, or Cosentyx, with these combination therapies providing more significant inflammation control than methotrexate alone. A recurring theme was the highly individual nature of the medication's effectiveness, the need for patience during dosage adjustments, and the importance of open communication with rheumatologists to find the right treatment plan when methotrexate falls short.

Hello there. I've been on methotrexate since June. On the plus side, I haven't experienced side effects but on the downside, it didn't help at all. My rheumatologist added humira injections to the mix about 5 months ago and that has made quite a difference. Again, I haven't noticed any side effects, so I'm very grateful for that.

I have been on it for about 13 years. I have no side effects except heartburn. It does help but for me it’s not enough by itself. I take a biological alongside it.

My mother was given the methotrexate and it made her very sick and made her pain worse. They haven’t as of yet tried that one with me and I am not sure that I want them to after going through it with Mom.

I've been on it for about 5 months now. I don't think it's working for me. Last dr visit my blood work showed progression so dr upped dosage from 4 pills 1x week to 6 pills 1x week. She said if next visit still shows progression she wants to add enbrel shot 1x week. I'm willing to try it
