I know this is an odd question, but has anyone else experienced an unpleasant odor of oneself that no one else smells and which seems to come from methotrexate? This is really annoying me.

Members responded to a question about experiencing an unpleasant odor from methotrexate, with most sharing that they had never noticed any odor themselves despite taking it for many years. A few members offered helpful perspectives, noting that phantom smells can be a thing with RA, and that prednisone may also affect taste and smell. A recurring theme was reassurance and encouragement to talk to a doctor, with members expressing empathy for feeling alone in the experience.

Phantom smells evidently is a thing with RA. Haven’t heard it’s from MTX specifically. I smell a burning/cigarette smell randomly. None in my home.

Methotrexate (MTX) is a commonly used medication for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While it has a range of possible side effects, changes in body odor are not typically one of them. However, changes in body odor while taking methotrexate could be due to other side effects of the medication or changes in your sense of smell. If you notice a change in body odor, consider:

- Consulting a trusted friend or family member for a second opinion.
- Reaching out to your healthcare provider for advice.
- Not stopping the medication without consulting your rheumatologist.

For managing body odor, you can:
- Shower regularly with antibacterial soap.
- Use antiperspirant and deodorant.
- Wear breathable clothing.
- Shave your armpits to reduce bacteria buildup.

If you have concerns, always discuss them with your healthcare provider.

Thank you, thank you! Finally somebody else. I keep asking my husband if I smell and he tells me no, too. I just want it to go away. Doc is no help.
