Best Foods

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

My 81 year old mum has RA, she hardly eats. She is weak and in a lot of pain and discomfort. She is also depressed. She is housebound and immobile as she also has bad osteoarthritis in her knee but is not strong enough for a knee replacement.
How can I get her to eat? What are the best foods? Which protein drinks etc are safe? Soups? Where do I start? She won't see a Dr about it at the moment but needs to eat well.

Desert Rose is giving you good advise. Funny enough, Carnation Instant Breakfast is well balanced and equivalent to many other more expensive supplements if you read the labels! Only difference can be that the 'medical' ones are lactose free, but if you need that, you can add lactase to carnation instant breakfast and leave it to sit in the refrigerator over night, It gets most of the lactose out. Best idea right now is give her what she likes until you see the Registed Dietitian. Any calories are better than no calories. She is blessed to have you. You could probably do a telelhealth visit.

So sorry about your Mom. A nutritionist (Registered Dietician) could be a huge help. In the meantime foods like ice cream, soft scrambled egg. cocoa, mashed banana are appealing, easy to eat and nutritious. Any foods she has loved in the past? I wish you the best, do seek help.

I am empathetic with your mom, my appetite is not good and I certainly don't want to cook. Desert Rose is giving you good advice and I am going to take it myself😀
