Methotrexate Making Flare Worse?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Portland, OR

I’m on my 8th week of Methotrexate, at first I was taking 0.6 ml for 6 weeks and my doctor increased it to 0.8 ml.

My last week’s dose, the next day I woke up with all my joints swollen and painful. I am unable to move at all and been bed ridden until now. Today is my 8th week dose of methotrexate, but I’m afraid to take it because I’m thinking I might get worst.

Anybody here on Methotrexate experience this? Thank you so much

Sorry to hear that, I been taking Plaquneil for almost 21 years and the same dose, no side effects ever. Just something to think about. I will keep you in my prayers, that everything will eventually work out. God Bless♥️

Wow! 🥴
You got just the reverse of what the desire in State is!
I have been on injectable methotrexate for 40 years at 1 mL dose or 25 mg every week. Was actually in the test group back when it was first being tested to treat rheumatoid arthritis rather than just blood cancer.
I have to admit there’s times for no reason I’ve gotten a bad flare and wondered if the methotrexate was causing it just because I want to blame something other than my rheumatoid arthritis and me! 😖
My experience - call your rheumatologist would be the first step.
And certainly I would agree that changing medication may be in order as well!
Overall, warts and all, methotrexate has saved my life!

I have been on methotrexate for several years and luckily had no side affects. Sounds like you may have to get another perscription.

Hi and thanks for posting this. YES, exactly what i am experiencing on my 7th week!! The doctor said I can switch my med to another, but that one is even scarier! I think i'll give Methotrexate one more week. I am not sure what to do next. let me know what you decide to do please. Thanks!

Yes, this happened to me, three times over many years. The last time I tried mtx, a few months ago, I could not stand it after two months. My body does not react well to these biologics. I've gone through 8 or 9 of them over the past few years. Currently I am on my second month of Kineret and I'm not worse, which is a huge step for me.

Please don't stop taking the mtx without talking to your doctor first. And be firmw with your decision to stop. There are other meds out there to try. You just have to find the one that's right for you.
