I am having severe problems with my knees (pain always and swelling some/most of the time. It is effecting my life very negatively. Prednisone helps and I have heard some people with RA get low doses as part of their treatment. Is this true? What dosage and what dangers?

Members who asked about long-term low-dose prednisone for RA pain shared that many have safely taken between 2.5 and 7.5 mg daily for years, with some adjusting upward temporarily during flares, though several emphasized the importance of regular bone density scans and calcium supplementation to monitor for osteoporosis. Many members described significant pain relief that made daily life manageable, while others candidly shared challenging side effects including weight gain, adrenal suppression, dry eyes, cataracts, and difficult tapering experiences. A recurring theme was that prednisone often becomes a necessary trade-off when other treatments fail or cannot be tolerated, with members encouraging close collaboration with doctors to find the lowest effective dose and monitor long-term risks.

I can't take NSAIDS or Methotrexate so I've had to take low dose prednisone for many years. I have osteoporosis but other than that (which is terrible) no other side affects. Without it I am in pain. At this point 2mg a day, used to to take 5mg a day. I up the dose when flaring, I have to.

Been on Prednisone for 2 years between 5 and 20mg. It’s not good stuff. You become dependent on it and your Adrenal gland shuts down.

Héliez. Yes I am on prednisone since many years. Tried different dosages. I am now at 7.5 mg for a long périod. If I go to a very bas crises, my doc upgrade to 10 or 15mg for a week or two. Together High dose of calcium daly and residronate one a week. And... together with an osteosporite exam every two years. Many secondary effects: dried eyes and cataract, dry skin etc etc. World préfer not to take but without i just cannot support such pain. Ho yes, gaining pounds too 😢

Yes, for about 3 years or so, maybe a little bit more. You have to make sure to get bone density scans if you do.
