I’m 5’4” and 230 lbs. I need to lose weight but exercising is not easy when you have this disease. The less weight I have the less stress on my bones. Steroids make it hard too. What do you all do to lose weight?

Members shared creative strategies for losing weight with rheumatoid arthritis, with many emphasizing that diet changes proved more effective than exercise given the physical limitations of the disease. Several members found success through calorie tracking apps, anti-inflammatory eating plans like Mediterranean or keto diets, cutting sugar and processed foods, and increasing protein intake, with weight losses ranging from 30 to 70 pounds and improvements in pain levels, blood pressure, and lab results. A recurring theme was that sustainable weight loss required treating it as a permanent lifestyle change rather than a temporary diet, with members encouraging each other to find what works individually, give themselves grace on difficult days, and celebrate non-scale victories like reduced inflammation and better bloodwork.

I am also 5'4" and weighed 265+. I knew I needed to lose weight so I started taking Keto Boost (talk with you doctor before starting). Good thing about Keto is no exercise required. I was wearing a 20/22, drank soda (not diet because they are worse for you then regular soda according to studies) and ate whatever I wanted (not healthy). I cut out sugar (started using splenda/stevia), making much healthier food choices (optavia has great lean and green meal suggestions), drank lots of water (NO soda but still had my coffee). I now wear a size 12 and weigh 177lbs. Getting the weight off has helped tremendously. I still have joint pain and days on end spent in bed but.....I feel so much better about myself. It was a complete lifestyle change but easy to do and worth it. Good luck in finding what works for you and sending you tons of support!

Keto diet will help you loose weight and by reducing the carbs and sugars your inflammation and pain should drop substantially within a few weeks and the weight will fall off if you stick to it. You may be able to cut back on the steroids if you talk to your doctor as the pain starts to decrease.

Carb watching if you have the strength to continue. No sugar or process foods. Pleaty of water and fruits and veggies, plus protein in fish and chicken. I have lost and gain it back.
Some days I give in cause I don't care and that is not good. Support groups are good if you can find one. WE'd helped but I stopped, just did it on line.
I am 50+over myself

I cut out all sugar and lost thirty pounds but have gone back on sugar and have gained it all back or almost all of it. So I sure am a bad example but if you can cut out the sugar it does help and they say it is really bad for you as well. I also went to physical therapy for a back ache and the exercises they gave me were not a lot like exercising but they did help so even that little will work. good luck to you it is hard

I was 185.6lb in 2021 . I'was on low dose prednisone scared of gaining more weight - I've tried exercise but with my hip problems I knew it was useless so I started hunting for common sense eating and ended up with the Mediterranean way of eating, it took awhile but I lost 65 lb and have maintained at 125 for the last year 1/2.

Do I feel better? Yes, not so heavy, proud of myself and love the new clothes, lol
But my joints still hurt, and I still have fatigue.......But I do not feel worse, so that is a good thing.
I still eat Mediterranean and am enjoying it completely. It's not a diet to me, its a new way of eating, one that I am not surprised to find out is the healthiest way to eat.

My blood labs are amazing and my BP went from 170/98 to 115/70 - As my daughter used to say "O Happy day!"
I am proud of me. I bought myself an e-bike as a reward - I just wish spring would hurry so I can ride again!
