Members shared deeply personal experiences with the difficult decision of whether to take RA medications, with some recounting serious complications like bowel ruptures, cancer scares, and debilitating side effects that led them to stop treatment despite ongoing pain, while others described finding relief with medications like Xeljanz XR or Methotrexate after initial side effects improved. Several members offered natural and complementary approaches including anti-inflammatory diets (avoiding dairy, gluten, and sugar), supplements like glucosamine and MSM, healing leaky gut, essential oils, and a product called VeraFlex, with many emphasizing that these strategies work best alongside medication rather than as replacements. A recurring theme was the tension between fear of medication side effects and fear of permanent joint damage, with members urging the original poster to work closely with their rheumatologist, advocate for themselves, and remember that untreated RA often leads to irreversible deformities and greater suffering down the road.

I was on Embrel weekly, methotrexate, Plaquenil and low dose of steroids daily. A year later the Embrel was changed to Humara. I had only one injection of the Humara. A couple of weeks later my bowel ruptured. I almost died. I had to come off of all RA meds. The doctors and surgeon agreed, the rupture came from the RA meds. I haven't taken anything for my RA for 1 1/2 years other than Mobic and that is for Osteoarthritis. Most days I am a lot of pain but refuse to go back on the RA meds. I thank God for allowing me more time with family and loved ones. The pain will just have to be a daily tolerance because I love life and my family. I try to sleep when I can. I may not be able to go to sleep until 2 or 3 in the morning. I add on more sleeping hours to my morning. I know a lot of people can't do this but if you can't take the meds, your sleep is very important. I've found I need 8 or 9 hours to feel better and have less pain during the day.

my brother in law has severe RA with another. He has broken his back twice and the list continues. He showed me this weekend something he has started taking and it has worked wonders plus you can take it with any current meds your on it all natural it is called VeraFlex. Joint health + immune system support. My sister in law is a nurse and said it is good for countless things. Going to order and give it a try

There are lots of options, you should be able to find something that the side effects are manageable. If you don't use medication your RA will get worse as you joints are destroyed. Not treating it now, will cause much more pain later.

I take Xeljanz XR so far so good. No side effects as I had with all others.
